Microsoft Proceeds with OneDrive Photos App After Accidental Rollout
Microsoft's OneDrive Photos app was accidentally shipped to millions of PCs recently. The app, intended for future release, was prematurely installed on some Windows devices due to an error in Microsoft's rollout process.
According to Jeff Teper, EVP of Apps and Agents at Microsoft, the app was shipped earlier than planned. However, instead of canceling the app altogether, Microsoft has decided to move forward with its development and release.
The company plans to provide users with more control over the app's presence on their devices. As revealed in the Microsoft 365 Roadmap, two new features are set to be rolled out: administrative controls for IT teams and a delete button for individual users.
The first feature, aimed at organizations, will allow them to manage user access to the Photos experience, including the ability to sign in with personal Microsoft accounts. This control is expected to roll out this month.
The second feature, which gives users more autonomy over their Windows experience, will enable them to uninstall the OneDrive Photos app independently without affecting file sync or deleting photos and files. This option is scheduled for release next month.
