Microsoft has formally elevated Rust to its top-tier internal language category, joining C++, C#, and TypeScript. This move follows years of gradual adoption across various departments, with over 100 internal repositories already using Rust.

The decision was announced at the annual RustConf 2026 technical conference in Montreal, Canada. Microsoft's Victor Ciura, a principal engineer in the company's Rust tooling division, emphasized that Rust is now a Tier 1 language within the company, with comprehensive support for its development lifecycle.

Ciura highlighted the advantages of 'rustc_codegen_utc,' a proprietary compiler backend developed by Microsoft. This integration connects rustc to MSVC's internal compiler infrastructure (UTC), allowing for compatibility and security features inherited from the Windows environment.
