Microsoft Purview Tool Prepares Organizations for AI-Driven Data Exposure

Microsoft's Copilot tool is gaining traction among organizations, but its adoption comes with a data exposure problem. This issue is not about licensing or rollout, but rather about sensitive files being overshared and permissions accumulating over time.

Data exposure can be difficult to fix because it's hard to know where critical business data resides and how it should be secured. To address this, Microsoft Purview Data Security Posture Management (DPSM) is a unified tool that automatically discovers, assesses, and mitigates risks related to sensitive data.

DSPM is part of the larger Microsoft Purview portal, which is essentially the company's control center for data governance. The tool continuously monitors sensitive information across Microsoft 365, Azure, and some third-party platforms, helping administrators determine where sensitive data lives, who can access it, and whether it's properly protected.

AI tools like Copilot expose permissions problems that already exist but may have gone unnoticed. They don't create these issues; they simply highlight them. DSPM helps organizations identify overshared data, inconsistent or missing sensitivity labels, high-risk permissions, and business data accessible to everyone.
