Microsoft Pushes Yield Imperative in AI Infrastructure
The semiconductor industry has long been driven by the concept of yield, which measures the number of usable chips produced from every wafer.
Now, as AI infrastructure is being built at an unprecedented scale, Microsoft believes it's time to apply the same principle to AI: what actually comes out? Not just more chips and tokens, but affordable intelligence, work that matters, and outcomes that improve lives. This is known as the 'yield imperative.'
The industry has been rapidly adopting AI, with a rate of adoption faster than the internet, PC, or smartphone. However, global penetration still stands at just 18% of the working population, and most usage is chat-based.
To move beyond this stage, Microsoft recommends pursuing two paths: evolutionary improvements to current architectures and transformational changes through new approaches to system and model design.
