Microsoft Puts WinUI Back at Center Stage with Public Development
Microsoft has announced that it will be focusing on WinUI as the native framework for Windows 11, after years of using web apps. This decision is a result of the company's promise to make its development public and transparent. Mainline WinUI development is now taking place on GitHub, where anyone can watch progress in real-time.
The move aims to bring back the 'native' experience to Windows, which will eventually reduce the web app problem that Windows has developed over the years. Native apps will be the focus for apps that are inbox/pre-installed, but this does not mean Microsoft will abandon other frameworks entirely.
WinUI's renewed focus is expected to improve performance and resource management, addressing concerns around WebView2-based apps, which can take up gigabytes of memory. The company has confirmed that it will make WinUI faster and use less RAM, with recent changes moving WinUI processes to a system compositor.
