Microsoft Quantum Chief Brushes Off Scientific Skepticism
Microsoft's corporate vice president of quantum, Zulfi Alam, has expressed a lack of interest in appeasing scientists who question the results of his team's research on Majorana quasiparticles.
Last year, Microsoft announced that it had effectively split an electron into these particles, a significant breakthrough in the development of quantum computers. However, some scientists were skeptical, citing inconclusive data and the lack of peer-review analysis for many of the results.
Alam dismisses the concerns, stating 'I don't really care' about the criticism from the scientific community. He believes that his team's research is commercially sensitive and cannot be publicized in its entirety.
Microsoft has been racing to develop a commercially useful quantum computer, which could solve complex problems in fields such as drug development and defense. The firm has announced plans to create a working machine by 2029 and believes that the feedback from scientists will only motivate them to work faster.
