Microsoft Reaches Deal with Teachers Union on AI Privacy in Schools
A deal has been reached between Microsoft and the American Federation of Teachers regarding the use of artificial intelligence in schools. The agreement includes 10 legal enforceable protections, with one key provision being that Microsoft cannot use teachers' or students' data to improve an AI model.
An exception is made for 'narrow safety and security' circumstances, according to Microsoft. If the company violates the agreement, it can be liable for a breach of contract.
American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten praised the agreement in a statement, saying 'We have forged a hard-fought, iron-clad privacy agreement with real teeth that protects students and families... This standard sets a high bar for child privacy and AI safety.'
