Microsoft Search Function Fails Across Multiple Services

Microsoft confirmed on August 17 that its search function had failed across SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Outlook on the web, and Outlook desktop. The incident was tracked as MO1456424 and affected users for a day before Microsoft deployed a fix.

The company attributed the failure to a recent deployment that introduced resource-utilization inefficiency, putting pressure on backend systems responsible for indexing and retrieval. This caused search queries to fail or return no results, even though content remained intact.

Microsoft Search helps users find what they need by bringing together results from various data sources in Microsoft 365, including SharePoint, OneDrive for Business, and Microsoft Exchange. However, when the index fails, finding specific information becomes impractical.
