Microsoft Security Chief: AI Shifts Game in Favor of Defenders

Microsoft's Corporate Vice President of Security, Taesoo Kim, believes AI advancements are shifting the game in favor of defenders over cyberattackers. In an interview following his keynote address at Smart Cloud Show 2026, Kim stated that 'in the AI era, offense and defense are not fundamentally different tasks.'

However, he noted that attackers are currently adopting AI rapidly while defenders face regulatory, compliance, and cost constraints, giving attackers the upper hand. But with AI enabling preemptive inspection of all possibilities, defenders will gain an advantage in the long term.

Kim led Team Atlanta to victory in the AI Cyber Challenge (AIxCC) hosted by DARPA last year, scoring 392.76 points in the finals. He also developed MDASH, an AI-based vulnerability detection system at Microsoft, which has identified vulnerabilities equivalent to 66% of all those discovered in Windows last year within four months.

Kim predicts that while AI will take over junior roles and narrow entry paths for security professionals, new opportunities will emerge. Generalists who understand AI, development, and security and can work across multiple domains will become increasingly important.
