Microsoft Settles Emissions Charges at Virginia Data Center
Microsoft has agreed to pay $2.499 million to settle allegations of excessive emissions at its Leesburg Data Center in Virginia.
The company allegedly exceeded its permitted fuel and emissions limits during a weeklong power outage in June 2025, when it operated 62 emergency engines.
The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) issued a notice of violation to Microsoft on August 21, 2025, and the company questioned DEQ's methodology for calculating the emissions estimates.
Microsoft has since invested $31 million in a duel-feed system to reduce the likelihood of an extended power outage.
