Microsoft Shifts to Open Development for Windows 11 Apps on GitHub

Microsoft has decided to revamp its approach to developing Windows 11 apps. The company is now building its WinUI framework openly on GitHub, giving developers and users a public view of Microsoft's work on the technology used to create modern Windows 11 interfaces.

The move comes after years in which Microsoft and other developers increasingly used web-based technologies to build Windows apps. This has led to some apps consuming more memory and system resources than expected, causing user frustration with applications such as Teams and Weather.

WinUI is designed around the Windows 11 look, including Fluent Design, rounded corners, dark mode, modern animations, and other interface improvements. Microsoft has been gradually using WinUI in parts of Windows 11, including Settings, the Microsoft Store, Notifications, and parts of File Explorer. The company plans to replace older Windows interfaces with newer designs.

However, it's worth noting that not all Windows apps will change immediately. Some major Microsoft products, including Teams and the new Outlook, still rely heavily on web tech.
