Microsoft Signs Landmark AI Safety Deal with American Federation of Teachers
The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has negotiated a groundbreaking agreement with Microsoft to ensure the safe use of artificial intelligence (AI) in classrooms.
Under the National AI Safety and Privacy Standard, Microsoft is barred from using student or teacher data to train its AI models, except for narrow safety and security scenarios. The standard also prohibits tracking students, blocks AI from making school decisions without human oversight, and bans monetizing user interactions.
The agreement comes after months of negotiation between the AFT and Microsoft's vice chair and president, Brad Smith. The standard will be made available to districts on November 1, and the AFT is currently in talks with OpenAI and Anthropic to secure comparable terms.
