Microsoft Stocks Plummet Amid Growing Ambitions for Maia Chip Technology
Microsoft's stock dropped by approximately 1.9% on Wednesday morning amidst growing ambitions for its Maia chip technology.
The software giant has reportedly been investing tens of billions of dollars into AI infrastructure, and is looking to reduce costs by designing its own chips rather than relying on outside manufacturers like NVIDIA and AMD.
Maia 200, a three-nanometer AI inference processor, is already in development, packing more than 140 billion transistors and 216 gigabytes of high-bandwidth memory. This chip is designed to handle workloads across Microsoft's empire, including Azure AI and Microsoft 365 Copilot.
The real significance of Maia lies in its potential to change the economics of AI infrastructure spending for Microsoft. By designing its own chips, the company can optimize data centers and control more of the AI stack, leading to better returns on its massive investments in Azure growth.
