Microsoft Surges Past Nvidia's Record Market Value Gain
Microsoft's market value surged by about $450 billion on July 30 after its fiscal fourth-quarter report, marking the largest one-day gain of any company. The previous record was held by Nvidia with a $441 billion gain in April 2025. Despite this significant increase, Microsoft shares still trade around 12% below their 52-week high.
The company's revenue climbed 18% year over year to $331.8 billion, while earnings per share rose 32% to $17.95. Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $59.3 billion in the fiscal fourth quarter alone, up 27% from last year. Azure's annual revenue also surpassed $100 billion for the first time.
A closer look at historical data reveals that large market value gains often have mixed results. Among six similar instances since February 2022, three companies saw their stocks rise significantly after the record day, while two experienced flat growth and one lost value. The common thread among successful cases was consistent growth following the initial pop.
Microsoft's future performance will depend on its ability to maintain revenue growth, particularly in Azure, which guided a 45% constant-currency increase for the first quarter. While shares are priced at about 25 times forward earnings, they may not be overly expensive given the recent growth.
