Microsoft Taps AI Safeguards in Schools Deal with Teacher Union
A significant agreement has been reached between Microsoft and the American Federation of Teachers regarding the use of artificial intelligence in schools. The deal includes 10 legally enforceable protections to ensure student and teacher data is kept safe.
One key provision states that Microsoft cannot use teachers' or students' data to improve an AI model, unless it's for 'narrow safety and security' circumstances. If the company violates this agreement, it can be held liable for a breach of contract.
American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten praised the deal, saying it sets a high bar for child privacy and AI safety. Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith also expressed support, stating that they will extend this agreement to every school district across the country.
