Microsoft Targets 38GW Data Centre Capacity by 2032 Amid AI-Driven Growth
Microsoft is aiming to triple its global data centre capacity by 2032, from around 12-15GW today to over 38GW. This would be one of the largest infrastructure build-outs in the industry's history.
The company has already begun expanding its operations across the US, with multiple projects underway, including a new campus in Pecos, Texas, and an expansion at its Cheyenne site in Wyoming.
A significant portion of this growth is focused on AI infrastructure, with Microsoft's Fairwater programme establishing purpose-built AI facilities. These sites are equipped with high-density GPU architectures, liquid cooling systems, and low-latency optical networking, making them ideal for intensive model training and inference workloads.
Matt Ryder, a Recruitment Consultant at DataX Connect, notes that the labour question is critical to meeting this target, particularly in terms of power, water, and workforce availability. 'We're potentially talking about adding more than 20GW of capacity in the next six years,' he says. 'It's not just the data centres either.'
Microsoft has also prioritised water stewardship, pledging to be water positive by 2030 and committing to a 40% improvement in data centre water use intensity. The company is already seeing success in this area, with recycled, reused, or non-potable sources accounting for 74% of water use in Quincy, Washington.
