Microsoft Targets Windows 11 Optimization for 8GB RAM Devices Amid AI-Driven Computing Challenges

Microsoft is making significant strides in optimizing Windows 11 to run smoothly on devices with just 8GB of RAM. This is a crucial development, especially considering the current state of the market where AI-driven computing has made it increasingly challenging for budget laptops to perform optimally.

The company's EVP of the Windows and Devices portfolio, Pavan Davuluri, stated that reducing Windows' memory footprint is their next target to deliver a fast and responsive experience across PCs. Microsoft has already made significant improvements, including fixing right-click behavior and speeding up the Search system, but this is a major milestone.

The increasing demand for AI-first computing has led to a surge in RAM prices, with costs more than quadrupling in the past year alone. The supply chain's forecast suggests that prices won't ease until 2028 at the earliest. This has resulted in higher laptop prices, even for Apple, and analysts predict that the sub-$500 entry-level PC segment will disappear by 2028.

Ranjit Atwal, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner, stated that PC memory costs are expected to peak at 23% of the total bill-of-materials (BOM) up from 16% in 2025. Microsoft's shift towards optimization is a significant step forward, and it remains to be seen whether they can pull off this feat.

In related news, Intel is working on Project Dragonwing to develop laptops with affordable price tags and sufficient RAM for smooth performance. This development highlights the pressing need for more budget-friendly options in the market.
