Microsoft Teams Up with Blykalla to Accelerate AI-Driven Nuclear Licensing
Blykalla, a global leader in advanced nuclear technology, has partnered with Microsoft to accelerate the permitting and licensing of its Lead-Cooled Advanced Nuclear Reactor (LCANR) using artificial intelligence (AI). The collaboration aims to reduce the time required for licensing from years to months.
The partnership involves the use of Microsoft's GenAI for Energy Permitting Solution Accelerator, which utilizes generative AI and AI agents to support the drafting, review, and refinement of permitting documentation against regulatory requirements.
Blykalla is currently advancing regulatory review in Sweden and the United States, where it plans to build two advanced nuclear reactor parks. The company's SEALER reactor uses a proprietary aluminum alloyed steel that can withstand the corrosive nature of liquid lead, enabling commercialization of lead-cooled fast reactors.
The partnership demonstrates how AI can be used to support the permitting process in the nuclear industry, which has traditionally been a bottleneck for new reactors. Blykalla's CEO, Jon Christensen, stated that 'AI is driving the demand for new nuclear, and it can also help deliver it faster.'
