Microsoft Teases Automatic Light and Dark Mode Switching for Windows 11
Microsoft is working on an automatic Light and Dark Mode switching feature in Windows 11. The new feature, still experimental, will use sunrise and sunset times, fixed schedules, or PC activity to switch between modes.
The feature was discovered by Windows Latest, which found a Windows.Shell.AutoDarkMode.dll file and strings such as “Schedule auto mode” in Windows 11 experimental builds.
Users can choose from three scheduling options: location-based (using sunrise and sunset times), fixed schedules (set to specific times of day), or idle recognition (switching modes when the PC is inactive).
The new feature aims to improve the user experience by automatically switching between Light and Dark Modes, reducing instances where a dark desktop opens bright system windows.
