Microsoft Teases Next Xbox Project Helix with Custom AMD SoC
Microsoft has taken an unconventional approach to its next Xbox console launch by publicly discussing its plans for months. The project, called Project Helix, has been in development since at least June 2025, when Microsoft and AMD announced a strategic partnership to co-engineer silicon across various devices.
The goal of Project Helix is to deliver an 'order of magnitude' leap in ray tracing performance and capability, integrating intelligence directly into the graphics and compute pipeline. The custom AMD system-on-chip (SoC) will be co-designed for a next-generation version of DirectX and AMD's FSR upscaling technology.
While Microsoft has disclosed more about its plans than any other platform holder in memory, it has also kept details to a minimum. No release date, price, or box shot has been confirmed, leaving many questions unanswered.
