Microsoft to Triple Data Center Capacity Amid Computing Power Shortage

Microsoft plans to triple its global data center capacity from approximately 12 gigawatts currently to over 38 gigawatts by 2032, aiming to alleviate computing power shortages.

The company has declined certain AI and cloud service contracts due to insufficient computing capacity, with previous instances including Temu signing a cloud services agreement with Oracle and GitHub experiencing an outage lasting nearly eight hours.

To address bottlenecks, Microsoft is commissioning new facilities, including the multi-billion-dollar 'East US 3' cluster near Atlanta, which will focus on CPU-based general-purpose computing.
