Microsoft Touts OpenAI Model as Default for Developers
Microsoft is telling its developers to rely on OpenAI's top-tier model when working on AI coding projects, as part of an effort to maximize efficiency. This guidance comes in a memo from Jay Parikh, executive vice president of Microsoft's CoreAI engineering group, who wrote that shifting workloads to OpenAI models helps the company get greater value from its token investment.
Microsoft has built its own AI programming model and gives cloud customers access to over 11,000 models, including those from Anthropic. However, the company wants developers to take advantage of valuable intellectual property rights that come from Microsoft's early investment in OpenAI.
The default model for GitHub Copilot coding tool is now set to OpenAI's flagship GPT-5.6 Sol, which was released in July. Parikh encouraged employees to use this model most of the time and adjust defaults as models and products change.
Microsoft has been tightening its relationship with Anthropic, agreeing to invest up to $5 billion in the company last year and releasing the Copilot Cowork product containing its models. However, the companies haven't made public assurances on intellectual property.
