Microsoft Unveils AI Accelerator Plans Amid Significant Investment Push
Microsoft is set to unveil its Maia 300 AI accelerator soon, which will be used for various applications. The company has already ordered over 300,000 chips from TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) for 2027 and aims to produce more than one million in the long term.
The Maia 200 is currently limited to two U.S. data centers, but Microsoft's cloud partners are engaged with the technology. This move is a significant step forward for Microsoft's AI ambitions, which have been a key focus area for the company recently.
Microsoft had previously entered into an agreement with OpenAI in April 2026, under which it would receive a 20% revenue share from OpenAI's workloads on Microsoft's cloud platform. However, this deal has now been removed, allowing Microsoft to keep more of the revenue generated by its partnership with OpenAI.
Microsoft spent $41 billion on capital expenditures in the quarter and produced $19.6 billion in free cash flow, indicating a strong ability to generate cash after investing in its infrastructure.
