Microsoft Unveils AI Safety Framework for Young People
Microsoft has introduced its Safe Participation Framework to protect children and teens online in the age of artificial intelligence. The framework is built on three pillars: safety by design, age-differentiated experiences, and education and empowerment.
The company's 'safety-by-design' approach embeds protections from the outset by identifying foreseeable risks and implementing safeguards proportionate to the risks. This includes restricting access to Microsoft's AI assistant Copilot for users under 13 or at a higher age where required by local law.
Maryland-based technology giant has also introduced measures to reduce exposure to harmful content, direct users to crisis-support resources when self-harm risks are detected, and encourage healthy use through break reminders and reporting tools. Additionally, the company's Bing search engine has strengthened protections against child sexual abuse material in its generative AI services.
