Microsoft Unveils AI Safety Plan with Mandatory Sign-ins and Age-Restricted Access

Microsoft has introduced new safety measures for its online services, including AI-powered tools and search engines. The company's Safe Participation Framework aims to ensure a safe digital environment for users of all ages.

The framework consists of three pillars: safety by design, age-differentiated experiences, and education and empowerment. Under the age-differentiated pillar, users must sign in to access Microsoft 365 Copilot, while children under 13 face restricted access to the assistant.

Microsoft has also strengthened protections against child sexual abuse material within its generative AI services and expanded its SafeSearch feature globally. The company introduced the Windows Age application programming interface (API), which allows developers to build age-appropriate experiences without collecting or sharing unnecessary personal data.
