Microsoft Unveils Ambitious Data Center Expansion Plan
Microsoft plans to triple its computing power and alleviate server shortages by expanding its data center network capacity to over 38 gigawatts by 2032, according to a recent report.
The tech giant aims to increase its total compute capacity from around 12 gigawatts today to more than 38 gigawatts across owned and leased facilities, Bloomberg reported. This expansion will resolve severe hardware constraints that have forced Microsoft to turn away cloud and AI clients, restrict subscriptions, and face service disruptions.
The company projects that AI-dedicated capacity will grow from 2 gigawatts now to about one-third of the total 38-gigawatt footprint by 2032. To achieve this, Microsoft is bringing new facilities online, including its multi-billion-dollar 'East US 3' cluster near Atlanta.
Industry rivals like Alphabet Inc., Amazon.com Inc., and Meta Platforms Inc. have also invested heavily in computing infrastructure, with a combined $2.4 trillion earmarked for this purpose. However, tech companies face growing headwinds in building large data centers due to public opposition over energy and land use.
