Microsoft Unveils Code of Conduct for MAI Models Amid Industry-Wide Governance Debate
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has announced that the company will release its first 'Code of Conduct' for its MAI models tomorrow, making it available for public consultation. This move comes as the AI industry undergoes a collective 'self-reflection,' with major players like Anthropic and OpenAI discussing the establishment of an industry standards body.
Nadella emphasized that AI governance cannot be controlled by a handful of entities and must be broadly representative across ecosystems, nations, and sectors. He also stated that any pursuit of superintelligence must be grounded in a core principle: if the AI built is not under human control, then it's not worth pursuing.
The company's three-tiered approach includes providing broad access and choice at every layer of the AI technology stack, ensuring enterprises maintain full control over their unique knowledge, and making its MAI model code of conduct available for public consultation. Microsoft welcomes research, focus, and a prudent pace to achieve alignment goals, while institutional ideas such as embedded evaluators are being explored.
The industry is also considering establishing an AI standards-setting body, with Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google running working groups since July this year. However, some companies have expressed concerns about the idea of self-regulation within the industry.
