Microsoft Unveils Next-Gen AI Chip Plans Amid Chip Industry Shift
Microsoft is preparing to introduce its next-generation AI chip, Maia 300, potentially as soon as September. The company introduced its first Maia AI chip in November 2023 but has struggled to catch up with rivals like Alphabet and Amazon in scaling up its in-house chip efforts.
According to a report from The Information, Microsoft is seeking to reduce its reliance on Nvidia's costly processors by investing in custom silicon. To achieve this goal, the company has been in talks with TSMC to secure manufacturing capacity for over 300,000 units of the Maia 300 chip for delivery in 2027.
Microsoft aims to significantly ramp up production and persuade major cloud customers like Anthropic to adopt the chip. The company ultimately wants to secure capacity for more than 1 million Maia 300 chips but faces constraints due to component supplies and ongoing negotiations with TSMC, according to the report.
