Microsoft Unveils Plan for Maia 300 Chip to Reduce Dependence on Nvidia
Microsoft's stock price rose by 2% as the tech giant prepares to launch its Maia 300 AI chip, which is designed to reduce its reliance on Nvidia processors. The new chip will be built using 3-nanometer technology and include a significant amount of SRAM, giving AI systems speed advantages when handling large volumes of user requests.
The move comes as cloud providers seek alternatives to Nvidia's expensive processors and look for more cost-efficient computing options inside their data centers. Microsoft has been ramping up production of the Maia 200 chip, which was introduced in November 2023, and is now looking to persuade major cloud customers such as Anthropic to adopt the new technology.
The stock's recent run-up has gotten stretched compared to its longer-term trend, according to analysts. The current extension matters because it can keep momentum traders engaged, but it also raises the odds of sharper pullbacks if buyers pause.
