Microsoft Warns Engineers Against Wasteful AI Token Use

Microsoft has sent an email to its engineers warning them against wasteful use of AI tokens. According to the report, Executive Vice President Jay Parikh stated that token-burning enthusiasm should be curbed in favor of focusing on maximizing outcomes for customers and the business.

The company is concerned about costs and wants employees to be more mindful of how they consume tokens while using tools like GitHub Copilot. Microsoft's code-hosting tentacle switched to usage-based billing in June, making it harder to ignore the cost of token consumption.

A spokesperson for Microsoft refused to comment on the report, but the email suggests that the company wants engineers to use AI with greater regard for cost and results rather than simply treating token consumption as a measure of productivity.
