Microsoft Warns of AI Agent Economics Crisis: TokenOps Offers 78% Spend Reduction
Microsoft engineers Tisha Chawla and Susheem Koul have sounded an alarm about the looming crisis in AI agent economics. Companies deploying autonomous agents are facing huge bills with no clear explanation of where the money went.
Uber reportedly exhausted its annual AI budget in just four months, while other firms burned through hundreds of millions of dollars in days due to runaway agent loops that couldn't be stopped by existing tools like LiteLLM and Cloudflare. These tools operate at the model-request boundary but can't see inside the agent's decision loop where costs are created.
Chawla and Koul propose TokenOps, an out-of-band governance platform that operates at the agent-run level. By moving beyond simple throttling to in-place steering, TokenOps has shown a 78% reduction in average spend while lifting completion rates from 67% to 96%.
