Microsoft Word 1.1a Runs Natively on Windows 11 Thanks to x64 Port
A developer has successfully ported Microsoft Word for Windows 1.1a to x64, making it possible to run this seminal 1990 word processor natively on Windows 11 PC systems.
The x64 port was created by JMarshall23 and is available on GitHub, but users will need access to Visual Studio 2022 with Desktop development with C++, a Windows 10 or Windows 11 SDK, CMake 3.25 or newer, and PowerShell to build and run the application.
The original release of Word for Windows 1.1a marked a significant milestone in the word processing market, introducing features such as WYSIWYG editing, graphics, and table insertion on Windows.
This version of Word also allowed users to run efficiently on systems with CPUs that ran at single-figure MHz speeds and with as little as 1MB of RAM.
