Microsoft's $241 Billion Carbon Removal Bet
Microsoft is investing heavily in carbon removal technologies to achieve its goal of net-zero emissions. The company has signed long-term purchase agreements with various project developers across different removal pathways, including forestry, soil health, and bioenergy.
The computing giant has committed to buying tens of millions of carbon dioxide removal credits, which are typically years before delivery while projects are still in development stages.
One such project is Amazon restoration, where Microsoft agreed to purchase up to 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide removal over six years from Mombak, a company that restores degraded lands in the Brazilian Amazon.
The project targets former cattle pastures and replants native tree species to restore ecosystem integrity and sequester carbon.
