Microsoft's $678 Billion Backlog Hides Financial Endurance Test

Microsoft's recent financial results paint a complex picture of the company's current state. On one hand, its backlog of contracted but unbilled revenue has grown to $678 billion, a staggering increase of 84% from last year. This figure serves as a counterargument to those who question the substance behind the AI boom.

Azure, Microsoft's cloud division at the heart of its AI strategy, continues to validate these commitments with 43% growth in the fourth quarter and annual revenue exceeding $100 billion. The market has taken notice, with shares climbing around 29% over the past month despite still being about 10% below their record high set in late October 2025.

However, building out cloud capacity at scale comes with a hefty price tag. Microsoft has reportedly signed contracts for over ten gigawatts of data center capacity, representing an investment pipeline exceeding $300 billion. This kind of buildout can't be funded from operating cash flow alone, and the company's market capitalization of around €3.1 trillion suggests investors believe it has the financial muscle to compete.

Against this backdrop, two senior executives have been trimming their positions. Takeshi Numoto, Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President, sold 4,810 shares on August 4 at an average price of $496.48, netting nearly $2.4 million. Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft Commercial, sold shares worth $4.88 million two days later.
