Microsoft's AI Bet Pays Off: Azure Revenue Surges 43% Amid Record Spending
Microsoft's massive bet on AI infrastructure has cleared a major test as its Azure cloud business experienced faster growth than expected. The tech giant poured $41 billion into AI, its largest quarterly capital expenditure yet, in an effort to boost computing capacity. This move paid off as the company posted a 43% jump in Azure revenue, significantly outpacing analysts' estimates of 40%. Microsoft's stock surged 15.5%, adding nearly $492 billion to its market value and setting a new record for the largest one-day gain by any company.
The impressive growth was fueled by increased demand for cloud services, which exceeded available supply. However, Microsoft has managed to quickly monetize efficiency gains from its investments, as CFO Amy Hood noted that 'when we can make efficiency gains, they are quickly monetized in quarter.'
This news comes on the heels of Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) own blockbuster cloud quarter, where Google Cloud revenue surged 82%. However, despite strong growth, Alphabet's stock plummeted 7% after the company raised its spending outlook. In contrast, Microsoft's stock jumped about 9% in after-hours trading as investors welcomed the stronger-than-expected results.
Looking ahead, Microsoft expects Azure growth to accelerate again next quarter, reaching roughly 45%, even as capital expenditures climb above $50 billion. With demand still exceeding available supply, Microsoft remains confident that its investments will continue to yield strong returns.
