Microsoft and Alphabet's recent financial reports have raised questions about their ability to absorb potential slowdowns in artificial intelligence (AI) spending. While both companies delivered strong quarters, Microsoft's balance sheet appears more resilient than Alphabet's.

Microsoft reported fiscal Q4 revenue of $90.01 billion, up 17.75% year-over-year, with Intelligent Cloud at $39.31 billion (+32%). Azure crossed $100 billion in annual revenue at 41% growth. Copilot monetization is a key factor, with 30 million paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats and net seat adds more than doubling quarter over quarter.

Alphabet delivered $119.80 billion in revenue, up 24.23%, with Google Cloud at $24.77 billion, up 82%. However, Alphabet's long-term debt jumped from $46.5B to $98.2B, while Microsoft funded its buildout from operations.

Microsoft CFO Amy Hood argued that the spend is throttleable, citing GPUs and CPUs as 'short-lived assets' that can be slowed if the demand environment changes. In contrast, Alphabet's proprietary TPU stack gives it lower unit-cost silicon economics compared to peers relying on third-party GPUs.
