Microsoft's Bing Wallpaper App Hijacks Desktops with Ads

Microsoft's Bing Wallpaper app has been criticized for inserting ads into users' desktop wallpapers. The app, which usually provides scenic and nature-themed images, displayed a minimalist vector image of Hogwarts castle from the Harry Potter film series along with text promoting all eleven movies in the series.

The change was met with dissatisfaction among users, who expressed their discontent on Reddit and Microsoft's Learn site. Some users noted that they were upset about the ad interruption, while others specifically mentioned their disapproval of author J.K. Rowling's transition from writing children's books to being an anti-transgender activist.

Microsoft has a history of inserting ads into its products, including Windows 11 and the Bing Wallpaper app itself. In 2024, the company was criticized for inserting ads into the Windows Start menu and pushing users through setup screens promoting its services.

The use of AI to generate some wallpapers served by the app has also raised concerns about user data privacy. Microsoft's handling of user data has been a long-standing issue, with previous instances of snooping on and decrypting browser cookies.
