Microsoft's Cloud Dominance Sparks Systemic Risk Concerns
Financial regulators have identified a potential systemic risk in Microsoft's $678 billion backlog of commercial remaining performance obligations. This backlog is equivalent to approximately 11.4 times the company's quarterly cloud revenue, which surged 27% to $59.3 billion in the fourth quarter.
Regulators are concerned that this concentration of technology running through too few providers could lead to a crisis of confidence if an AI-powered cyberattack were to occur. As Financial Stability Board Chair Andrew Bailey warned, such an attack could turn this concentration into a major financial-system risk.
The trade-off for Microsoft's cloud dominance is rising scrutiny from regulators. The company becomes more valuable every time another bank, business, or market platform relies on its cloud infrastructure. However, this indispensability also puts a target on Microsoft's back, with regulators demanding tougher backup systems, faster recovery times, and credible switching options.
The shares of Microsoft currently trade 12.04% below the GF Value estimate of $580.59, indicating potential upside for investors. Nevertheless, the price of cloud dominance is increasing, and the company must address these concerns to maintain its market position.
