Microsoft's EWS Shutdown Sparks Warning for Businesses
Microsoft will begin disabling its Exchange Web Services (EWS) API on October 1st, ahead of a full shutdown in April 2027. EWS has been around for almost two decades and is used by many organizations to connect applications to Exchange mailboxes.
The main challenge organizations will face when migrating from EWS to Microsoft Graph is visibility - many may not know where or how EWS is being used. This lack of visibility can make migration feel daunting, especially if a poorly managed migration could disrupt critical tools and workflows.
Instead of burying their heads in the sand, organizations should treat the retirement of EWS as a reminder of the need for robust software lifecycle management. This means treating APIs as part of the digital supply chain and applying the same level of scrutiny used for third-party suppliers when evaluating a potential integration.
