Microsoft's Flat Stock Price Leaves Investors Questioning Rally
Microsoft's stock price has remained flat this year, despite its strong rally in recent months. The tech giant's shares are up around 2% year to date, but many investors who bought in during the depths of its sell-off in April and June have seen a more significant return, with gains exceeding 30%. To put this into perspective, those who invested $1,000 at that time would now have over $3,300.
The company's valuation is currently around 25 times forward earnings, which some analysts consider reasonable for an AI hyperscaler like Microsoft. However, the stock's price has not reflected its solid results on the fronts of AI and cloud computing. In its latest quarter, Copilot, Microsoft's AI assistant, reached 30 million paid seats, while Azure, its cloud computing platform, surpassed $100 billion in revenue for the fiscal year, accounting for about a third of Microsoft's top line.
While some analysts believe that Microsoft will likely outperform the market over the next year due to its faster-than-average growth, the potential for huge returns in the near term has come and gone. The company is now fairly priced, making it less attractive for investors looking for a quick return on their investment.
