Microsoft's Fumbled Smartphone Venture: A Cautionary Tale of Market Dominance
Microsoft's venture into the smartphone market was marked by failure and lack of success. Between 2010 and 2015, the company released a series of Windows Phone operating system-powered smartphones but they never gained traction in the market. The dominance of Apple's iPhone and Google's Android made it difficult for any other player to break through.
Mistakes were also made by Microsoft with its Windows Phones. One critical misstep was the release of Windows 8, which attempted to revitalize PCs by making them imitate smartphone interfaces. However, this had the opposite effect and damaged the entire brand for a time. The lack of a user base meant developers were uninterested in making apps for Windows Phone.
The failure of Windows Phones was further compounded by Google's decision to pull its services like Gmail and YouTube from the platform in 2013. By 2017, even Bill Gates had switched to Android over Windows' struggling smartphone software. In October 2017, Microsoft ended development on Windows 10 Mobile before fully ending support in January 2020.
