Microsoft's HorizonDB: A Latecomer in a Crowded AI Database Market
Microsoft's cloud-native PostgreSQL alternative, HorizonDB, has been in public preview for nine months. The service is expected to attract more enterprise AI and agentic workloads to Azure, but analysts question whether it's worth the wait.
The main issue is that other major players like AWS, Google, Databricks, and Snowflake already have production-ready PostgreSQL services for these workloads. For example, Aurora PostgreSQL became available in 2017 and has since evolved into an AI-ready service with vector search and integrations with Amazon Bedrock.
Analysts warn that enterprises may not wait for HorizonDB's general availability, which is currently targeted for the second half of 2026. David Linthicum, an independent cloud consultant, said 'Most enterprises with urgent needs will not wait.' The uncertainty around SLAs, pricing, operational maturity, and roadmap confidence makes it a high-risk choice.
