Microsoft's Id Software Layoffs Spark Concerns Over Corporate Understanding of Creative Culture
Microsoft's id Software studio has been hit by layoffs, with 136 employees let go in a restructuring that has left many in the industry questioning corporate leadership's understanding of creative culture.
Lead services programmer Chris Hays spoke out on the German gaming podcast Auf ein Bier, criticizing Microsoft's short-term focus and claiming that corporate executives 'fundamentally don't understand art. They don't understand games. They don't understand that business model.'
Hays emphasized that modern game development requires complex pipelines, unlike projects built a decade ago, and warned that losing key engine specialists harms future development, as rebuilding technical talent takes years.
The layoffs have also sparked concerns about the impact on id Software's engineering team, which is responsible for the proprietary id Tech engine. The studio's workforce reduction has been met with criticism from the union representing id Software employees, who filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board.
