Microsoft's OneDrive Photos App Debacle Hits Windows 11 Users
Microsoft's OneDrive Photos app has been mistakenly pushed to general Windows 11 users since August 1, according to a report published by Windows Latest on August 9. The app was intended for a limited group of testers but ended up being deployed to nearly all Windows 11 users with the OneDrive sync client installed.
The affected group includes enterprise users running Windows Enterprise licenses and those with personal Microsoft accounts. However, the app only works with personal Microsoft accounts, causing confusion when it was also pushed to corporate accounts.
OneDrive Photos is a photo management app designed to provide a unified view of photos stored locally and on OneDrive. It features capabilities such as randomly displaying past images and AI-powered design. Despite its functionality, the app lacks a standalone uninstall feature, requiring users to delete the entire OneDrive sync client to remove it.
Microsoft acknowledged the error in deployment scope, stating that they are developing a new photo experience in OneDrive but it reached a broader audience on Windows than intended. The company confirmed plans to implement a feature allowing OneDrive Photos to be removed separately from the main OneDrive client.
