Microsoft's Sustainable Campus Revolutionizes Workplace Design

Microsoft's Mountain View campus is a showcase for innovative design that prioritizes environmental sustainability and employee wellbeing. The campus, located near the San Francisco Bay, was transformed into a model of sustainable development by treating water, ecology, and human health as interconnected systems.

The project team used the challenges posed by climate pressures, urban resource constraints, and nearby creek habitat degradation as an opportunity for innovation. A comprehensive water strategy became the framework for decisions on landscape planning, planting selections, system integration, and community engagement.

One of the unique features of the campus is its visible infrastructure, where rainwater collection, treatment, and storage are showcased through visible channels that help tell the story of conservation and reuse. The integrated water network includes bioretention swales, water treatment elements, blending tanks, and other components that support groundwater recharge and creek health.

The campus also prioritizes human wellbeing by organizing around a multi-courtyard concept that brings daylight, fresh air, and nature closer to employees. Access to operable windows, courtyard connections, task lighting, adjustable shades, ceiling fans, and flexible furnishings all contribute to comfort, accessibility, and choice throughout the workday.

The campus has achieved LEED Platinum, WELL Platinum, LBC Net Zero Carbon, and LBC Petal Certified status with Water, Beauty, and Equity leading. The project builds on Microsoft's global approach to a healthy workplace and sets a new benchmark for sustainable development in the industry.
