Middle East Airlines Hold Firm on Fleet Expansion Plans Amid Airspace Disruptions
The Middle East's airline industry is showing resilience despite short-term airspace disruptions. Boeing reports that no Middle Eastern carrier has requested to defer or restructure their existing orders, with a backlog of over 930 aircraft.
This represents about 14% of Boeing's global commercial order backlog and indicates the region's commitment to fleet expansion. Carriers such as Riyadh Air, Flynas, and Emirates are moving forward with plans for long-haul connections through the Gulf, despite a 14% year-on-year drop in international traffic demand due to geopolitical reroutings.
The regional aviation industry is adapting to these changes by evaluating manufacturer delivery backlogs and airline fleet choices. Airlines like Riyadh Air have exercised options for 28 Boeing aircraft, including six A350-1000s, while Flynas has made additional firm commitments for 25 Airbus planes, bringing their total order to 235.
