Million-Dollar Recall: Broken Bolts Force Homeowners to Rethink Attic Access
More than 1 million attic stairway ladders have been recalled after reports of falls and injuries. The recall includes ladders sold at Home Depot, Lowe's, and other retailers across the US. Louisville Ladder Inc. issued a voluntary recall of 1,770,000 ladders under various brand names.
The ladders in question are aluminum or wood frame models with gas struts that fold into the attic. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the problem lies in the bolts on these ladders, which can break and cause injuries.
There have been 11 reported incidents of broken bolts, including one case where a person suffered neck, head, and back injuries. The affected ladders were sold nationwide between November 2012 and July 2026 for prices ranging from $170 to $600.
