Mixed Futures Ahead of July Employment Report
US stock futures were mixed on Friday ahead of the July employment report, with the Dow Jones index slipping and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 indices rising. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' report is expected to show total nonfarm payrolls increasing by 97,500, with the unemployment rate holding steady at 4.2%. This would mark an acceleration from June's gain of 57,000 jobs.
Atlassian Corp. saw its stock surge 30.25% in premarket trading after reporting better-than-expected fourth-quarter financial results. Trade Desk Inc., on the other hand, plummeted by 27.45% following worse-than-expected second-quarter financial results and soft third-quarter revenue guidance.
Luis Alvarado, Co-Head of Global Fixed Income at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, views the current trajectory of the US stock market and broader economy through the lens of shifting capital demands, particularly surrounding the massive funding needs of artificial intelligence. He emphasizes that markets must first finance AI expansion before it can boost productivity and long-term economic growth.
