Moderna and Merck Advance Personalized Cancer Vaccine in Phase 3 Trial
Moderna and Merck have made significant progress in developing a personalized cancer treatment for melanoma. The Phase 3 trial, which involved patients who had their cancer removed, showed that those who received the treatment were less likely to have their cancer return.
The treatment combines KEYTRUDA, an existing cancer immunotherapy drug, with a custom-made mRNA therapy designed specifically for each patient's tumor. To create this personalized approach, doctors analyze a patient's tumor after surgery and identify its unique mutations. They then develop an mRNA therapy that helps the immune system recognize and attack any remaining cancer cells.
According to Merck and Moderna, the goal of adjuvant therapy given after surgery is to increase the possibility of cure for more patients. The companies plan to share the full results from the Phase 3 trial at upcoming medical meetings and with regulators. If approved by the FDA, the treatment could eventually become available to melanoma patients after surgery.
