Moderna and Merck Unveil Cancer Vaccine Hopes with Customized Approach

The personalized cancer vaccine being developed by Moderna and Merck has generated excitement in the medical community, potentially offering a new approach to treating certain types of cancer. This treatment combines an mRNA vaccine with Merck's immunotherapy Keytruda to train the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells.

How it works is quite complex. After a tumor or cancerous lesion is surgically removed, the companies sequence it to identify unique mutations. They then create a customized vaccine targeting up to 34 specific mutations in that patient's cancer. The treatment involves infusing Keytruda every six weeks and the mRNA vaccine to train the immune system.

Experts believe this treatment may be most effective in highly mutated cancers, such as melanoma. Cancers with high mutation rates, like lung and colon cancer, could also be promising targets for this technology. Dr. Michael Atkins stated that it is unclear whether the vaccine will work against other types of cancer.
